Medical Marijuana Q&A

What is medical marijuana?

Medical marijuana is the use of marijuana to treat or manage a health condition. Marijuana contains chemicals called cannabinoids. These chemicals interact with your body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is a cell-signaling system that communicates with your nervous and immune system.

The cannabinoids in marijuana may bind to or block receptors in the ECS to reduce pain, boost mood, or increase appetite.

Who qualifies for medical marijuana?

Pennsylvania’s medical marijuana program limits the use of medical marijuana to specific health conditions. You may qualify for medical marijuana certification if you have:

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • An anxiety disorder
  • Autism
  • Cancer, including cancer remission
  • Brain or spinal cord injury
  • Dyskinetic and spastic movement disorders

What happens during a medical marijuana consultation?

Before your medical marijuana certification consultation, the team may request you send in medical records that indicate you have a qualifying condition. You must also sign up with the Medical Marijuana Registry before your appointment.

During your visit, the team reviews your medical history and symptoms and completes a physical exam. They may also do diagnostic testing to confirm or rule out a diagnosis that qualifies you for medical marijuana certification.

After your exam, the team submits your certification to the Medical Marijuana Registry. Then, you complete your registration and pay for your medical marijuana ID card. Once you have your ID card, you can go to a medical marijuana dispensary.

What if I need to renew my medical marijuana certification?

In the state of Pennsylvania, you need to get recertified by a medical professional every year to continue to participate in the medical marijuana program. The team at LSR Wellness can provide the evaluation and recertification for medical marijuana. This service is only available to LSR Wellness practice members.
